The Man Who Paints Water Drops / 물방울을 그리는 남자
A son’s endeavor to understand his father through the obsession that has occupied most of his life: painting water drops. This Asian symbol of serenity gradually reveals a dark backstory, rooted in the tragic history of the artist’s homeland. Kim Tschang Yeul painted his first drop of water in 1971. Since then, this famous Korean artist has never painted anything else: small drops, big drops, hyper realistic drops, abstract drops, and so on. His body of work is a blend of aesthetics, meditation and alchemy. Its aim: to distill the world’s violence into crystalline drops of water. This man is a living enigma, shrouded in silence, like a sphinx.
This film sets out to peel back the layers beneath the public image of this old sage. Through his life, his past, his secrets and personal history, the universality of man emerges - the ever present quest for the discovery and communication of meaning.
